From the brink of apocalypse

Daniel Mendes

October 9, 2024

Over the recent weeks, Brazil and several other countries have been experiencing what has been described in the media as a ‘climate apocalypse’. The term implies that our efforts to devastate the Earth are proving successful.

Wildfires are rampant, and even the skeptics are beginning to realize that something is wrong.

The phenomena scientists have been saying for years are now unfolding in our everyday lives. The frequency and severity of fires, floods, extreme heat, and powerful hurricanes are increasing.

There is no more effective messenger than reality itself.

These changes are unfolding before our eyes. Often, we don’t accept something until we witness it firsthand. This is human stubbornness.

Reality is coming at full speed toward us, prompting us to finally question our leaders and their actions regarding climate change. The efforts to change or protest might still be a whisper, but it is definitely there.

For Brazil, an even more concerning factor is that certain organizations estimate that up to 99% of the fires have been ignited by human activities, predominantly tied to the agricultural sector, often for the purpose of expanding cattle farming.

Hence, we are not only confronting the worldwide phenomenon of climate change but also facing the compounded impact of ultra-conservative politics meshed with the economic craziness of capitalism speeding up this process.

How can we believe in change or that our actions will make any difference? The truth is, that anxiety and concern will be part of our thoughts, but we are faced with a clear choice: either we take action and attempt to make a change, or we live our lives in denial, pretending everything is fine.

At Chameleonic, we’ve chosen to focus our efforts on communication for the nonprofit sector. We aim to collaborate with organizations deeply committed to making a social and environmental impact, whether through direct action on the ground or through advocacy.

We believe in the organizations we work alongside. We also hold a strong belief that communication and engaging stakeholders can serve as powerful levers for action. Whether it’s through developing an app, launching a website, or crafting a communication strategy, our commitment to driving change remains.

Rather than being future-oriented, we should let it confront the real issues head-on.

What’s crucial is creating actions within this system, aiming to navigate and transform it from within.

The answers we seek already exist. Communities on the fringes of capitalism have always been fertile grounds for innovative solutions. Take, for instance, the issue of wildfires; lands managed by Indigenous Peoples have shown to be effective in preventing such events, showcasing the power of sustainable land management.

Progress hinges on our ability to truly listen and learn from the unsung heroes of our society. As long as we are entangled in a eurocentric perspective, failing to engage in more inclusive and diverse dialogues, we stand to not find solutions.

Elevating these voices through effective communication is at the heart of what Chameleonic stands for. If you’re keen on learning more about us, please don’t hesitate to reach out, or start by exploring our website.
