Legal empowerment through tech for women in Malawi
The Gender and Justice Unit sought to expand access to legal rights for women in Malawi. With limited resources and complex legal frameworks, there was a need for a digital tool that could simplify processes and empower users with critical information.
Bringing Legal Support to Women in Malawi
Women in Malawi often face significant obstacles when trying to access legal information and services. Complex laws, limited resources, and systemic barriers make it difficult for many to understand their rights or seek help when they need it most. The Gender and Justice Unit identified the urgent need for a simple, accessible digital tool that could empower women with reliable information and practical guidance to navigate these challenges.
Our Approach
Using human-centered design, we developed a user-friendly app that integrates clear language, visual tools, and offline access to empower women with knowledge of their rights.
The Solution
To address the barriers to justice, we co-created the EmpowerLine App, a digital platform designed to simplify complex legal systems and make rights information accessible to women across Malawi. The app integrates four core features:
Virtual Assistant
A 24/7 chatbot that provides immediate assistance, guiding users through legal topics, offering step-by-step support, and connecting them with relevant resources.
Legal Topics
Comprehensive information organized into categories such as Domestic Violence, Violence Against Children, and Workplace Rights, helping users quickly find and understand the laws that protect them.
Key Terms
A glossary with clear explanations and interactive tooltips that demystify complex legal jargon, empowering women to make informed decisions with confidence.
Local Language Access
Available in Chichewa, Chitumbuka, Chiyao, and English, ensuring inclusivity and understanding across diverse communities.
From Knowledge to Empowerment
By making legal knowledge more accessible, the app strengthens women’s ability to navigate legal systems, assert their rights, and connect with critical resources.
